Cognitive Psychology
First of all, I believe that it's important to give a definition of what exactly is cognitive psychology. Cognitive Psychology is the branch of Psychology that exploring internal mental processes. It's the study of how people think, remember, perceive, solve problems, speak and learn. I have found an article by Ulric Neisser that explains what is cognitive psychology, the characteristic methods and the topics of investigation and I think that it can help us a lot to understand this branch of Psychology.

Also, I have found an article by Glenn Regehr, Phd, and Geoffrey R. Norman, Phd, which presents a number of topics in cognitive psychology, summarizes the findings in the field, and explores the implications for teaching and learning.

A slighty more abstract article by Thomas J. Schuell also explores how understandings of cognitive psychology have influenced attitudes to learning. As the article was published in 1986 it provides a good hitorical basis of the theory in contrast to behaviorism.

Recent research and application

A study into learners preferences into the design and application of web-based learning. The study by Caiyun Gao & Feifei Wany (2010) find that learnes prefer instruction with a basis in cognitive psycology. (I am not personally convinced of the value of the paper and would welcome other thoughts about whether şt should be left as a resource.)


One educationalist associated with the field of cognitive psychology is Piaget. His work suggets that children go through a series of fixed stages.Although his ideas are still well regarded and feature on teacher training course for primary aged children throughout the world they are not without their critics.
